Casa Mia Montessori School was started in 1999 by a group of enthusiastic parents. The school is located in the centre of the historic town of Bassendean tucked into a curve of the Swan River.
The Children’s House was in the first Bassendean pre-primary classroom and remains so to this day. In 2010 the Montessori school was able to add to its heritage collection with the acquisition of a 1940’s school room with its lovely high ceilings, jarrah floors and quaint green sliding/folding board stretching across the breadth of the classroom.
Casa Mia Montessori School follows the Montessori Method of Education. Dr Montessori, physician, psychologist and noted humanitarian, studied children of many racial, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds for over 50 years and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times.
Her lifelong, intense scientific observation of the human being from birth to maturity allowed her to distil a body of philosophical, psychological and pedagogical principles. These together with a vast range of autodidactic materials came to be known as the Montessori Method of Education.
By the start of the twentieth century there was rapid growth of Montessori schools all over Europe and the United State. In Australia the first Montessori school opened in Sydney in 1910.
Casa Mia Montessori School is currently one of 210 Montessori Schools and child care centres in Australia.
