At Casa Montessori School the children are taught to write the font Victorian Modern Cursive.
Formal handwriting lessons start once the child has been observed to have developed strength in their writing arm; the correct pencil grip; the understanding of the concept of starting point and end point; the instructions top, bottom, and the movement left to right.
All letter start ‘at the top’; in particular capital letters with the pencil being lifted off the page at the end of the stroke and taken back up to the top of the letter.
It is very important that children are taught the correct starting points and end points from the beginning as these will feed into the learning of ‘running writing ‘in the third year of Lower Primary.
In Children’s House the children will be taught the correct formation of some capital letters and the lower case letters.
In the first two years of Lower Primary, the children will learn to place the letters correctly on the line and when to use capital letters.
In the third year of Lower Primary, the children learn to writing ‘joining letters.
For those children or parents who wish to practise the handwriting, please find a sample sheet illustrating the letter and number formation.
