Montessori education, like that offered in Casa Mia Montessori School, is different from any other early childhood education.
Like all other Montessori schools, Casa Mia practices the uniquely effective Montessori Method. Dr. Maria Montessori – the founder – designed a specially prepared environment that promotes freedom to learn, movement in education, sensorial experiences and music and intellectual development.
Montessori schools have special prepared environments to develop a child’s physical and spiritual
wellbeing. Inside the classroom, things are simple and uncluttered with different types of learning spaces like tables and chairs, shelves, and carpeted areas.
Outdoors and nature is very important in the Montessori Method. All Montessori schools’ outdoor spaces are filled with trees, flowers and plants, as well as little nooks and corners for children to play, interact or just relax.
Freedom in learning
Freedom in the Montessori Method is not about leaving a child unsupervised but rather removing any ‘obstacles’ that may hinder learning. Children in Montessori schools have the freedom to choose the activity or didactic material they want to engage with. A child can learn on his/her own or in a playgroup.
Montessori schools are interactive spaces that encourage children to move around freely as they learn. At a glance it may look chaotic, but it is actually a carefully coordinated space where children independently move from one activity to the next.
Outside the classroom, exercise and activity is important. Children play ‘free games’ with balls, hoops, kites, and bean bags and participate in gymnastics. They learn how to look after plants and animals.
Sensory experiences and music training
The Montessori Method trains all the senses. Didactic materials are made up of different materials like polished wood, fabric, enamel or metal. Children learn to distinguish different shades of colour and to silence and sound.
In music training, children learn to identify different sounds by listening to two sets of bells; one arranged to scale and one in a mixed order.
Montessori Method is wholesome learning. Children learn physical life skills that can help them become more independent like dressing themselves, setting the table or preparing a simple snack. These tasks train concentration and focus.
Children will also be exposed to mathematics, geography, geometry and finger exercises to help them develop writing skills.
Casa Mia Montessori is one of the leading Montessori schools in Perth, also offering a Montessori playgroup. We employ the unique Montessori Method to prepare an environment, filled with rich resources that can encourage and stimulate your child to be enthusiastic about learning.
